ONCE UPON A TIME

Once upon a time, in the old, old town of Nicosia, there stood a magical museum – the most wondrous place in the whole of the land. It was a home of creation, imagination and exploration; a crossing place into the realms of fancy, full of fantastical items and enchanted objects. Even the building itself was under the spell: doors opened into mystical forests, walls transformed into towering books, and the stairway was guarded by a wicked, fire-breathing dragon.

HOW TO HYGGE

I hate winter. With a passion. There are only two good things about the colder months: skiing and Christmas. Everything else revolves around trying to keep warm and wondering where the light went. And so I hibernate, retreating into my cave in late November, spending a lot more time sleeping, and only emerging, occasionally, to forage for food.

THE DAKAR DREAM

Intense, extreme and punishing, The Dakar is an annual off-road endurance event known as a ‘rally raid’. First raced in 1978, it was originally known as the Paris-Dakar Rally for its start and finish points. But since 2009, when the event moved to South America to escape security threats in Mauritania, it’s been called The Dakar – a race in which hundreds of competitors from all over the world race cars, bikes, quads and trucks nearly 9,000km in the space of 12 days.

Steve McCurry: on landscapes

From the mesmerising image of a child (snapped mid-flight as he leaps down a painted alley) to the sweeping seas of the Philippines – and the three fisherman who, battered by the elements, perch delicately atop their poles – McCurry imbues each of his landscapes with a very human element...

THE THIRD CULTURE

You know you’re a Third Culture Kid (TCK) if filing a ‘permanent address’ fills you with anxiety. If you flew before you could walk. And if you can curse convincingly in at least three languages. But personally, I know I’m a TCK because I dread meeting new people. Not that I’m terribly shy, or even antisocial, but because, sooner or later, I know I’ll be asked that dreaded question throws every TCK into a paroxysm of stumbling inanity: “Where are you from?”.

CYPRUS - A CULINARY JOURNEY

Destined to grace the kitchen counters of homesick émigrés, the coffee tables of gourmet tourists and the bulging bookshelves of literary escapists, 'A Culinary Journey' depicts those who perpetuate the gastronomic traditions of the island. In extensive, heart-warming detail...

Get set to go legion

If your idea of a good time is dressing to the nines and sipping champagne, turn the page. Because this week we’re all about getting down and – really! There’s going to be barbed wire. And trenches. And fields upon fields of mud. You’ll shed tears, sweat buckets, and bloody your knees. And you’ll be spending the day in the company of several thousand other madcaps who enjoy pushing themselves to their limits in what’s billed as the ultimate endurance test.

WORLD'S NO 1 DJ

Last time I went, it was Armin Van Buuren who topped the global ranks, and the night was utterly fantastic. Nothing, but nothing could compare to the sensation of being part of that crowd: whipped into a frenzy, sweat-soaked and trance-happy till dawn. Except, maybe, the joy of telling one’s British cousins you’ve secured a ticket to a beach-front party with the top DJ in the world (smug?

WINNING OVER THE WORLD

Billed as the 'Energetic City', Limassol is the vibrant centre of island life. Hosting an ever-growing number of world-class competitions and competitors, this is the town that's putting Cyprus on the global map as a viable destination for international sport. The ideal place for the athletic elite to train, compete and enjoy...

TALES OF CYPRUS

Half a century ago, moving to another village – let alone an entirely different country – entailed a life-changing decision. And yet, in the early part of the 20th century, thousands of courageous Cypriots left their homes and their families to journey half way round the world to Australia... What prompted this exodus? How have the lives of these émigrés changed over the years? And what do they recall of the home they left behind, half a world and a half a century away?

MEDITERRANEAN IMPRESSIONS

This was the true Cyprus, an island where black-clad grandmothers crocheted under the lemon trees while their husbands drank sketo in the sun. And, until recently, it was a way of life I thought had been lost. But the true Cyprus still exists, if you know where - and how - to look...

TECHNOLOGY OVERLOAD

In America, March 6 to 7 is National Unplugging Day. The brainchild of rebooters.net, from sundown to sundown, people everywhere are encouraged to forgo technology in an effort to reconnect with the real world. And I, personally, think it’s a great idea: not only does it help the environment,it also gives us the screen-break we need in this fast-paced, digitally dominated world.

About

ALIX NORMAN

Hello, and welcome to my pressfolios page. Let me tell you a little bit about myself: I'm a born writer, and have been fascinated by language ever since I can remember; while other kids were squabbling over the Plasticine, I was presenting my teacher with yet another four-page story on - well, at that age - anything with the word 'magic' in the title!

Fast forward thirty-odd years, and I've made the dream a reality: a professional writer for more than a decade, I'm still enchanted by the power of the written word, and able to use my extensive experience to ensure that you, too, are equally captivated.

Confident, creative and comfortable working to the tightest of deadlines, I'm committed to excellence in communication, and regularly see my work published in both national and international newspapers, magazines and online. I'm well-travelled (having lived in several countries around the world), fascinated by almost everything, and a firm believer in the idea that we all, without exception, have a story to tell.

This was mine. I'd love to hear yours...
